Sai kept telling herself that she was there just to relax.
Taking a prolonged dip just to forget, if just for a moment, the cares and worries of the world of men.
She was a quite literally a fish out of water. A mermaid living and working among the land dwellers.
It wasn't an easy life.
Louder, far, far louder than she would have liked.
Her boss didn't make things any easier for her either. He was a bulbous, gluttonous, foul mouthed, little man. A lecherous, cantankerous, miserly man. He had followed her as closely as a dog is followed by its tail.
Then there was her landlady. Gossip was her trade and her trade was booming. She knew just about every secret that her tenants or her neighbors tried to conceal. Sai knew that once the landlady knew your secret, whatever that secret was it would not remain a secret for very long.
She had nothing on Sai, despite her numerous, and sometimes legally questionable efforts.
Sai sighed as she stared at the subway tiles on the wall by the tub.
"If only she knew..."
Again she tried to convince herself that she was only in that tub to relax. If she was honest, perfectly honest with herself, than she would admit that she wasn't in that tub just to relax. She was there to escape. To escape from her past. Escape from the memories of a kingdom to which she could no longer return. To escape from the grim specter of a vile and disturbing murder...
